The people of southern Africa are faced with life-threatening challenges every day. Among the most severe are HIV/AIDS, malaria, malnutrition, and starvation. Children are especially affected. Even if they themselves do not become sick or die, children are likely to lose one or both parents to disease. Living Compassion is working to improve this situation by providing food and other necessities.

Some facts:

  • AIDS kills 6,000 people each day in Africa - more than wars, famines and floods. Millions of children are orphans, many with HIV or AIDS.
  • The virus is cutting down Africa's most energetic and productive people: adults aged 15 to 49.
  • Life expectancy in more than a dozen African countries will soon be 17 years shorter because of AIDS. Zambia has the lowest life-expectancy in the world: 33 years of age.
  • Hunger and AIDS have trapped millions of Africans in a spiral of sickness and death. AIDS dramatically undermines food production.
  • Unemployment is rampant, in Zambia it is well over 80%.

How far do our donation dollars go?

In Zambia (see map below),

  • $12 per month pays for one child to attend school and eat lunch every day.
