How it all began:

It began with a dream born between two brothers in Zambia that traveled all the way to Italy and the United States and then back to Zambia—the dream of creating a home for orphaned vulnerable children where they could grow up with a loving family.

It was when Brother John Kapenda, a Franciscan Friar from Zambia, met Cheri Huber in Assisi, Italy, that the dream of the Living Compassion House began to become a reality. Brother John has worked with vulnerable children for many years and it was the desire of his brother, Ignatius, and Ignatius’ wife, Grace, to take in eight vulnerable children and raise them. Since they were adolescents, John and Ignatius spoke of one day being in a position to reach out and assist others in the same way they had been assisted.

As it was completely in the spirit and mission of our organization, the idea so inspired Cheri that she agreed on the spot that Living Compassion would fully fund and support the house. In summer 2004, Living Compassion purchased a simple 3-bedroom, 1-bath home in Ndola and, shortly thereafter, it was filled with the joyful sounds of young children enjoying life in their new family.

The kids, who ranged from age 7 to 13 when they moved in, came from extremely dire circumstances. All were malnourished and basically owned just one piece of clothing and no shoes. Most of the time, they did not know where they would get their next meal. But in one short year, they have made an amazing transformation and are now healthy and well-cared for, attending school and thriving in their new community.  Living Compassion has made a long-term commitment to the well-being of this family, including their medical and educational expenses.

Most recent news:

During our last trip to Zambia we had a chance to spend time with the children in the house.  We were amazed to see how they are thriving in their new home.  It was great fun to teach them Frisbee and other games and learn some of their games and traditions as well.
