Growing up even in the most loving family is not an easy task.  The very process of socialization, that we could say children must go through in order to learn to fit into society, is abusive.  The way socialization happens is that we are taught that we must be carefully watched and monitored and punished so that we don’t do things that are bad and wrong.  What we are left with is a belief that who we are, when left to ourselves, is bad and wrong.  We believe, deep down at a level that we are not consciously aware of on a daily basis, that we can’t be trusted, that our instincts will lead us to do wrong things and be bad people.  Most of us, if we are asked, “Do you believe that?” would say, “No, I don’t believe that. I know I’m not a bad person. I’m a good person.”  And yet, if we watch, we can see that the way we respond to ourselves, the way we treat ourselves, is as if we are bad people who have to be carefully watched all the time and punished regularly in order to stay on track
