Potter Beatrice
|
Beatrice is a true rustic potter. She forms, glazes, and fires beautiful pottery using only her hands and a fire pit she has dug in her backyard. Every day Beatrice gathers clay from the banks of a small creek fed by the Kafubu River. She carries the clay on her head, in the tradition of African women, back to the small mud hut she shares with her carpenter husband and their children. Her family lives in Kantolomba Compound, a slum outside Ndola, Zambia.
You can make a difference
As part of Living Compassion’s commitment to providing support for local businesses in Kantolomba Compound, Keep It Simple will be bringing Beatrice’s beautiful pottery to the United States. When you purchase one of these handcrafted bowls, you are not only supporting Beatrice and her family, you are helping to bring an entire community out of poverty. Living Compassion will pay Beatrice a fair price for her work. This will enable her to grow her business by hiring apprentices to whom she will teach this ancient art. The difference between what Beatrice is paid and the cost of the bowl here in the U. S. will be returned to Kantolomba Compound to support schools, meal programs, health care, and additional job training.
