At the heart of all the work that is done in the practice—in this case, in the kitchen—is an attitude of keeping the bigger picture in view. We buy organic food as much as possible because it supports those who eat it as well as the farmers and the planet. We are conscious of being sure to compost and recycle as much as we can because that puts to good use what we are not able to put to good use. And we look to see what is as sustainable as possible. Saving water in buckets for the garden and lawns is an example that comes to mind.
It is always heartening to see what can be done when we look to what is possible. That’s why, after all the groceries we purchased for the New Year’s Retreat were unloaded, we became aware that the shoppers bought some interesting gray bottles of Method hand soap. We have been buying their cleaning products for several years now, but the company took their consciousness raising efforts to a whole new level. The tags on the gray bottles claimed that those bottles were made from recycled garbage floating around in our oceans that the employees collected themselves. Wow! We couldn’t help but be excited to spread the news with all of Sangha. If you would like to learn more about this, please click these links:
