The kitchen plays a central role at the Monastery during retreat season as we prepare three healthy, vegetarian meals each day for large groups of people. It truly is a team effort to accomplish this. It is inspiring to work in the kitchen alongside willing, dedicated and hard-working volunteers and visiting monks. From washing produce and chopping vegetables to washing dishes and cleaning up after meals, there is no shortage of tasks to be done. The efforts of everyone are felt, and the presence of the volunteers and visiting monks adds more than just the additional tasks accomplished. It gives a boost to the energy and brings to me an increased focus on practice and gratitude.
I am grateful for these individuals’ commitment to practice and willingness to be of service and contribute to Sangha and the Monastery as a part of the kitchen team. My own practice is supported by all who come to the Monastery to practice with us, and working meditation in the kitchen is one place where this support is received.
