PEACE FLAGS benefit our work and share the teachings of Cheri Huber. Each strand is unique, made with conscious awareness and lovingkindness. They are the result of collaboration among the monks at the Zen Monastery Peace Center and Innisfree, a community in Virginia serving the mentally handicapped. The 2007 version features a new center flag and a new selection of quotes from Cheri Huber.

About Our Peace Flags

The monks at the Zen Monastery Peace Center are now creating Peace Flags. The Peace Flags benefit Living Compassion and share the teachings of American Zen teacher Cheri Huber in an artful and meaningful way.

The handmade papers incorporated into the flags are made by people with special needs at Innisfree Village in Crozet, Virginia. Innisfree was founded in 1971 to meet the continuously evolving needs of adults with mental disabilities. Community members live together in modern style family homes, on the farm or in Charlottesville, Virginia. They serve side by side to create an interdependent life experience where friendship, mutual respect and encouragement are the guiding principles.

Innisfree has several acres of gardens, worked and cared for with organic practices.  Their paper-making operation began with a group of gardeners who found themselves in between seasons; the gardens had been put to rest, teas and spices processed and the greenhouse not yet ready for planting.  They began to experiment with a deckle, some old telephone bills, flowers, and even bolted spinach from the garden.  They liked the results and have incorporated the work into their regular daily lives.

The background papers were taken from salvaged books that once lived in Susan Shoaff’s bookstore located in Murphys, California. Recently, Susan’s bookstore burned down. Instead of putting the charred remnants from the fire into a landfill, she has partnered with Living Compassion by offering the damaged books to the Peace Flag Project.

Pages from an outdated edition of the Zen Monastery Peace Center Cookbook are also included in each strand of Peace Flags.

The black cord from which the Peace Flags are hung is made from 100% Hemp.

Every Peace Flag is created mindfully by people who practice at the Zen
Monastery Peace Center. Each flag is unique and original. Once the flags are complete, the monks meditate with them before they are sent out into the world.
