Peace Pilgrim: On Foot for Peace

Peace PilgrimOn the front of her blue tunic in white letters it said, PEACE PILGRIM, and on the back, 25,000 MILES ON FOOT FOR PEACE. It might well have said, “25,000 miles and counting,” because Peace Pilgrim reached that mark after eleven years, and she continued walking for the next seventeen years, until her death in 1981.

Peace Pilgrim declined to tell her birth name, age, or place of origin, since they were irrelevant to her mission, and she wanted all focus upon her mission. “The tradition of pilgrimage is a journey undertaken on foot and on faith, prayerfully and as an opportunity to contact people. Constantly as I walk along the highways and through the cities, people approach me and I have a chance to talk with them about peace.”

She walked in all 50 states of the United States and in all of the Canadian provinces. What galvanized her was the vision of nuclear destruction now hovering over the world, and the even more powerful vision she held of the people of the world moving beyond fear and choosing peace.

Peace PilgrimWhat would that take? Fundamentally, it would take believing in the goodness of people and taking steps to awaken and focus that goodness upon peace. Peace Pilgrim carried nothing with her and made no plans. She ate when people offered her food and slept indoors when offered shelter. She accepted no money from anyone. “And I can truthfully tell you that I have been supplied with everything needed for my journey, which shows you how good people really are.”

Her message to each person or group she spoke to was about their own capacity to create peace. “All people can be peace workers. Whenever you bring harmony into any unpeaceful situation, you contribute to the total peace picture. Insofar as you have peace in your life, you reflect it into your surroundings and into your world.” Do not wait for leaders or miracles to bring peace. Focus your own energies. “What we dwell upon we help to bring into manifestation. One little person, giving all of her time to peace, makes news. Many people, giving some of their time, can make history.”
