A Yearlong Email Class from Cheri Huber
Subject: "How to Have a Life You Want to Live"
Dates: September 1, 2006 through August 31, 2007
Cost: $600

Cheri and her staff are devoting a year to creating and sending daily emails to participants in this class. The money generated from this class will support the work of Living Compassion: retreats and workshops at the Monastery and around the world; support for the growing number of orphaned children in Africa; an international Peace Center in Assisi, Italy; and a radio show that offers free access to individual guidance to a global community.

Class Description
We all dream of living the life we want to live. We envision a time and place where everything we want to have, do, feel, and be is available. “When the kids are grown/my health gets better/I find the right partner/I make more money/things slow down a little…then I’ll focus on trying to live the life I want to live.” But how can we have the life we want now? What keeps the realization of our dreams in the future? Are our life circumstances keeping us from having, doing, feeling, and being what we want? Among the many things we will explore in this class will be the origins of “wants” and the role of dissatisfaction in our lives.

Some of the themes of this class are:
Identifying “who the players are” in your life
Sorting out what the real issues are
The suffering of dissatisfaction
Abundance and deprivation
Compassionate acceptance of life as it is

How the Class Works
You will receive a daily email from Cheri. Once or twice a week she will give you an assignment to do, usually asking you to look at an aspect of yourself and your life. You do the assignment (or not), write down in an email your experience of the assignment, and send it in. Emails without assignments are usually clarification and/or encouragement. All emails begin with inspiring quotes. Cheri’s staff creates a single document of all the emails received, removes all names and identifiers (anonymity is assured), and sends it to Cheri. She reads the emails and responds to a representative sample. These emails with Cheri’s responses are sent to the whole class on the weekends. The focus will be on your own work, on daily exercises that will bring more conscious awareness to your life. You may write in as much about your process as you would like, knowing that it will be read, even if it doesn't come back with a specific comment from Cheri.

Cost
The cost of $600 is due before the class begins. We require payment up front so that later on, when the voices of ego are trying to talk you out of participating, you will remember this significant financial commitment and the voices won't so easily sabotage your effort. We do not offer discounts, scholarships, or an installment plan—although you can pay in installments before the class begins. If you want to join the class but do not have the money right now, please consider borrowing it from someone you can pay back in installments.

Time Requirement
2-5 minutes a day (10-15 minutes on the weekends) will usually be enough to read the material. The amount of time you spend on the assignments depends on your level of desire to participate. For instance, if you were exploring the effect of dissatisfaction in your life, you could practice being aware of every time dissatisfaction arose during the day, or you could think about it once and never think about it again. It's up to you.

Participating in this class is like having for a year the kind of support you would have at the Monastery.

Registration
If you have already registered and paid for this class you do not need to register and pay again.

Please go to LivingCompassion.org to register. We prefer payment via credit card as this saves much monk labor. If this is impossible for you, we accept checks as well. Again, we accept payment in installments only until the class begins on September 1.

We look forward to your participation.  If you have questions, please let us know.

Gasshō*

* “Gasshō” is a palms-together gesture that means “my heart and your heart are one.” It is used in greeting and in parting and as an expression of appreciation and gratitude. Cheri usually begins and ends all emails with “Gasshō.”

Testimonials from
Email Class Participants

It is no exaggeration to say that, second only to meditating, this class is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

. . .

The yearlong class has been excellent. As I live inthe UK and don't have the opportunity to get to the monastery, it provides a brilliant way of participating in a Sangha. I have now been doing the online e-mail courses for three or four years and still wonder at how similar we all are - how my "private" and "totally individual" idiosyncrasies are shared by so many others: how often I read someone else's response and see that I could have written exactly the same. It is a great help in gradually getting out of the habits of taking everything personally and finding the world deadly serious. Thanks for making it possible.

. . .

The interactive aspect makes it even better than reading Cheri’s books (and that is saying a lot!)

. . .

The email classes that I have been taking with Cheri Huber for the past three years have helped me to achieve my one main goal: to attain more depth, richness, and joy in each moment of life, no matter the external circumstances.

. . .

The combination (synergy!) of Cheri's guidance and the deeply felt presence of the email community which formed around this class was amazing. The vitality and commitment of the participants was very present. The way varieties of quotes, assignments, and participant responses plus guidance appeared in my inbox rain or shine whatever else was happening was deeply encouraging to my practice.
