One moment of a person’s life is a fact so
stupendous as to take the luster out of all fiction.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
When I began contemplating the theme for this issue, "Radical Acceptance," I
looked up the word radical in the dictionary. It's fun to see how my notion
of a word compares with the dictionary. In Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary,
the first definition is root, followed by fundamental and extreme—all
very interesting words to contemplate.
In preparation for writing this piece, I've been noticing the experience and
practice of accepting life exactly how it is. It's a simple process that is
growing with practice. The practice is rooted is sitting meditation. Maintaining
awareness of the breath and body sensations is fundamental. Believing nothing,
not taking things personally and not making assumptions help to train the mind.
As I write, I'm so charged with energy! To sit here, with awareness of the
breath in the body, and allow the words to arise is so completely satisfying.
Being life interacting with life, with awareness of the breath in the body,
opening and relaxing with all that arises nourishes the being.
