I am days away from our first journey to Zambia in 2012. As I prepare, it occurs to me that the principles of practice are the most important item we bring with us as we journey to do the work in Africa. A couple of examples:
1. We must give it everything we’ve got with no attachment to the outcome.
In practice, some days feel transformative and miraculous, while others seem to make “no difference at all.” Similarly in the work in Kantolomba, many projects have just not gone anywhere, with no logical explanation. Others take off with wings of their own. I love the experience of giving all of it 100% and letting Life choose. The joy is in the compassionate effort rather than an end result.
2. We must each work out our own salvation diligently, and we cannot do it alone.
There are times in practice when I wish someone could do it for me, make it easier. But in the end I am eternally grateful that Sangha is company along the way, encouragement and support for a courageous journey.
That feels a perfect parallel to our collaboration with the team in Kantolomba—there is no one saving anyone; it’s not possible. We are holding hands and saying yes to the possibilities Life offers.
Watch for blogs to begin around July 16 or 17.
