Practice Corner

Upping my game for 2014 is taking the form of “Pay Attention to Everything.”  As a child, hearing “Pay Attention!” was sure to have me cringing while expecting something awful to happen.  But now, with practice, paying attention has become a favorite pastime and a means to experiencing the life I’ve always wanted.

It’s amazing to see the dramatic difference between doing a simple, everyday task while thinking about something else, and the experience of bringing all one’s attention to what is taking place right here and now.  When paying attention, all the senses light up and delight: colors are brighter, aromas are richer, textures and shapes become distinct.  Joy becomes available, moment-by-moment.

And since we know that giving and receiving aren’t separate, as I “give”/pay attention to experience I receive nourishment on a level much deeper than when distracted.  Giving attention to how the body feels while exercising, for instance, is more nourishing and satisfying than exercising while watching TV.  It’s like Life pours into me through the vehicle of attention.  And that's a small price to pay for feeling alive.
